Marquette Figure Skating Club hosts the Ron Carlson Marquette International Open competition (non-qualifying), each year in February. The Berry Event Center arena is located at the corner of Fair Ave and 3rd St on the campus of Northern Michigan University, it is a 1 rink facility, with the ice surface measuring 100′ x 200′. U.S. Figure Skating and Skate Canada sanction the competition. The competition is open to all eligible, reinstated eligible or readmitted persons who are members of the U.S. Figure Skating Association. Competitors come from all over Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ontario-Canada to participate. Various events are offered such as; Free Skate, Compulsory/Short Program, Artistic Showcase, Spins, Jumps and Solo Dance. Skaters are placed into groups of no more than 8 skaters to a group and are grouped by level first then age. Medals, ribbons and in some cases trophies are awarded to the competitors. Locker room facilities, concession with seating area, and skating vendor sales area are all available. Two competitive tracks are available to skaters: The Excel Track through Senior and the Well-Balanced Free Skate Track through Pre-Juvenile. Excel aligns testing requirements with competition levels. Included in the RC-MIO is a Basic Skills competition with events of Snowplow Sam through Pre-Freeskate in Elements and Program with music. Each event will have a maximum of 6 skaters.
Marquette Figure Skating Club in conjunction with the Marquette Senior High School Figure Skating Club hosts the U.P. of Michigan High School Figure Skating Competition at the Ron Carlson Marquette International Open in February. Team events are offered. Michigan teams placing in the top two places in overall will qualify for participation at the State of Michigan High School Figure Skating Championships. Teams from Michigan and surrounding states are welcome to participate.
